When the exposed brick and raw steel of industrial interior design first started popping up in residential spaces, I scoffed. It felt like a look borrowed from a downtown coffee shop, not somewhere you’d actually want to fall asleep. Then I moved into a 500-square-foot loft with 14-foot ceilings and a concrete floor that echoed every footstep. Suddenly, that bare-bones aesthetic wasn’t just a style choice. It was a survival strategy. You learn fast that every square inch has to earn its keep, and the furniture has to pull double duty without looking like a compromise. That is the real challenge of pulling off industrial interior design in a small home. You need the grit without the grime, and you need furniture that works as hard as you do.
