In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, the permanent residents were housed in a refugee camp at Nong Kok in Krabi Province. The only way to get to the Phi Phi Islands is by ferry from the all nearby major piers in Phuket, Krabi (including Ao Nang), Ko Lanta and Phang-nga. The nearest tourist destinations are Ko Lanta Islands to the east, Phuket Island to the west, Ao Phang Nga National Park to the northwest. About 70 kilometers off the coast of Phang Nga, this small archipelago sits in the Andaman Sea and forms part of Mu Ko Similan National Park. Phi Phi Island, off Thailand’s Andaman Coast, is a must-visit for its stunning beaches, exciting activities, and vibrant nightlife. The real name of the national park being Hat Noppharat Thara – Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, Phi Phi Islands National Park is a world famous marine park in Krabi Province south of Thailand, covering an area of about 388 km². The national park encompasses two areas of which one is the coastline from Krabi Town to the east side of the province (Hat Noppharat Thara) and the second one Phi Phi Islands (Mu Ko Phi Phi) further south.

Phi Phi Island is one of the most famous island destinations in Thailand, about 45 kilometres southeast of Phuket. The nightlife on Phi Phi is famously energetic, with beach bars and fire shows after dark. Guests can also enjoy the resort’s beach bar, which serves cocktails and drinks in a stunning beachfront setting. Guests staying at the hotel enjoy breakfast here, and the restaurant is open to everyone for lunch and dinner. Rooms at this Phuket hotel are complete with a private bathroom fitted with a hot tub and free toiletries, while certain rooms are fitted with a seating area. For the regular visitors Phi Phi Islands are more comfortable for day trips as the smaller islands are not too far from the main island accommodations, while Surin/Similan Islands require long day trips from the mainland. We used 3 different companies to dive while in Hawaii, and Kona diving stood out as best in class. I booked a trip to Kona so I can dive with Manta Rays for the first time and Mantas decided NOT to come out and play the first night I went with them, but thanks to Kona Diving Company, they gave me a discount on the second day of diving and I was able to dive with Manta rays!

We went diving multiple days with Trixi, Dave Tommy, Emro, and Hailey who all have great attitudes and lead with a “no bad days” attitude. Everyone went silent. It was as if the entire limestone cliff were hollow. If you are doing multiple days of diving, they will keep your BDC, reg, and wetsuit the entire time and have it ready to go for you the next day. The boats will operate less frequently during the rainy seasons with risk of cancellation on the days with bad weather conditions. The park is affected by tropical monsoon weather resulting in two seasons; the rainy season from May to December with highest rainfall in July and the dry/hot season from January to April. The park is known for its beautiful white-sandy beaches, coral reefs, crystal clear waters and limestone karsts, popular among divers and snorkelers. The most popular destinations in the park are the islands around Phi Phi and a few beaches along the coast of Krabi.
